Why people think it’s not for them & Why it is!
Some say they cannot sit still, they are hurried, easily distracted, no way ‘can I quieten my mind”
“To many people have tried meditation & given up. They’ve concluded, I’m just not that kind of person”
– Belisa Vranich, Clinical Psychologist, New York. Author of book “Breathe”
You know you don’t have to be the Dalai Lama or Gandhi to be able to mediate, right!
Some say they find it hard to spend time alone in their thoughts, hard to avoid the internal contradictions and fears, when doing nothing and sitting still.
Well I have good news for you…… In meditation you are not just sitting still. You are breathing, you are training your mind, you are exploring all sorts of connections and relationships with yourself.
If these are the reasons you are choosing not to meditate, they are also the very reasons why you should be meditating.
Meditation is quieting the mind, just being with oneself. For the beginners and those who have tried and believe ‘it’s not for me’, here is a few reasons why you should integrate mediation into your life and a basic technique to help you along the way.
Some of the benefits, scientific research has shown by practicing meditation are:
- Taking control of your thoughts
- Lengthening your attention span
- Promoting emotional health
- Stress reduction, less stress translates to less anxiety
- Enhances shelf-awareness
This is to name a few.
When you first start out with meditation, or you may having been practicing for a while and you are experiencing external stimuli that is stopping you from your practice; you need only do a few minutes at a time to begin with. This few minutes needs to be guided to help you focus and relax into the meditative process.
As you become more attuned, you will be able to slowly increase the amount of time you spend meditating, you will naturally find yourself wanting more. You can start off with as little as 3 minutes, then 5, 7, 10 and so forth. Slowly increasing by a few minutes at a time, increasing your ability to stay in the moment.
The other key factor to understand is that the mind will wonder. This is a good thing! Your like What??? It is OK for your mind to wander. It is normal, it is a way of you getting the chance to train your mind, train yourself to focus and be in the moment. When you mind wonders, you acknowledge it for what it is, don’t not go deep into thought, just acknowledge and let the thought go. Always bringing awareness back to the breath.
I hope this has helped you, and you have decided to give meditation a go. It can truly change your life and this beautiful practice will enable you to align yourself with your inner essence to restore health, balance and well-being into your life.
