Chakras, what are they & Why are they so important?
Some people are believers, some are on the fence and others well….. What we all must be able to agree upon is that we are all energy.
Our sense of being separate from the universe in some way is an illusion – described to us by Albert Einstein –
“A human being is part of the whole called by us the universe, a part limited in time & space. He experiences himself, his thoughts & feelings as something separate from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of this consciousness”
Chakra is a Sanskrit (ancient language of india) word, literally meaning ‘wheel’ or ‘Vortex’. They get this name purely because of their shape and function. Chakras exist within the non-material energetic counter part of our physical body.
The human body is composed of 7 chakras, that are located along the spine extending out of the front and back of the body. These 7 energetic centres are numbered from the Root chakra, being 1 our material-self identity up to number 7 the Crown chakra where our spirit-level awareness takes place. These centres are also associated with colours….. that though is for a different blog!
The key is to keep the chakras in a balanced state, this keeping our flow of energy throughout the body healthy and optimal. Each of the 7 chakras are associated with certain parts of the body and certain organs.
- 1. Root Chakra – found at the base of the spine. Associated with physical vitality, muscles, nervous system, adrenal glands
- 2. Sacral Chakra – found below the navel. Associated with power in life actions, lower intestines, reproductive organs, digestive tract
- 3. Solar Plexus Chakra – found near the diaphragm. Associated with personal power, stomach, liver, gastrointestinal
- 4. Heart Chakra – found at the heart centre. Associated with love, compassion, heart, lungs, immune system
- 5. Throat Chakra – found on the throat. Associated with verbal communication, throat, bronchial, thyroid gland
- 6. Third Eye Chakra – found between and slightly above the eyes. Associated with seeing, intuition, eyes, nervous system, endocrine system
- 7. Crown Chakra – found on the top of the head. Associated with spirituality, intuition, enlightenment, brain, pineal gland, lymph glands
The above descriptions of the chakra system is very brief, they are a lot more complex than this blog is in need of describing, but you get the idea of where they are on the body and their basic assassinations to the physical body.
The openness and flow of the energy through the chakras determines our state of health and balance. This understanding empowers us to maintain the balance and harmony that the body needs on a physical, mental and spiritual level.
Meditation, Sound Therapy and Reiki all seek to balance the energy of the chakras by purifying the lower energies and guiding them upwards from the Root chakra to the Crown chakra. In saying that chakras can be worked on as individuals, if a blockage is found, this then can be released and balance re gained. We can acquire an awareness of how we spend our energy and we become capable as individuals of balancing our own life force.
So hopefully this has answered the question, What are chakras & Why are they so important, giving you a better understanding of how they affect our everyday living. I hope this will encourage you to engage in activities that allow you to stay in balance optimising the flow of energy through your body, allowing each cell and organ to resonate in harmony with the whole being.
